Mentoring

SEP is launching a mentorship scheme, open to members at postgraduate level and above.

Why a mentorship scheme?

Academia can be challenging for everyone. Those working in the traditions of European and Continental philosophy may face special challenges, as these traditions are less professionalised through clear disciplinary groupings and institutional supports. Early Career Researchers often lack structured guidance, and in a field as small and dispersed as European philosophy, the experience can be isolating.

We particularly encourage applicants from under-represented groups, as research shows they frequently miss out on mentorship opportunities compared to their peers (SWIP UK).

Our scheme is designed to:

  • Boost confidence and reduce isolation among SEP members.
  • Create a space to discuss professional challenges and opportunities.
  • Offer personalised career guidance, tailored to individual goals

Who can participate?

Mentees: SEP members from MA level onwards, including PhD candidates, postdocs, early-career researchers, and those between academic contracts.

Mentors: All SEP members are welcome to volunteer, including those between academic job contracts.

N.B. If you apply as a mentee, we might find that you could be suitable as a mentor too.

How does it work?

  1. Mentorship Agreement
Once you’ve been paired up, you and your mentor will sign an agreement outlining mutual expectations, goals, communication frequency and meeting format (in-person, virtual, email).
  2. Duration
Standard initial term: one year, extendable by mutual agreement. Either party may end the agreement early if goals are unmet.
  3. Setting goals
    Common objectives include:
    • CV enhancement and career planning
    • Publication strategy and timeline
    • Job application preparation and mock interviews
    • Navigating academic culture and departmental issues (SWIP UK)

Mentors may also advise informally on administrative challenges, diversity initiatives, or work–life balance—but are not expected to supervise academic work.

How do I join?

We deeply appreciate the time and expertise offered by our volunteer mentors and the trust of mentees in joining the scheme.
